Without doubt Fuerteventura has some of the most impressive beaches in the whole of Europe. There is such a vast expanse of sand here. Fuerteventura has a large population of birds, which attracts many bird watchers from all over the world. The location of the Island provides a winter 'stopover' for many 'migratory' species. The municipality of La Oliva is located in the northern part of Fuerteventura, with an area of 356km2 and a total of 14.600 inhabitants at present. It’s climate, like the rest of the island, is dry, and the landscape has a barren and spent appearance. The average annual temperature lies from 18.8 to 19.6 degrees centigrade. The predominant vegetation is thorny scrub which spreads over hills and plains, with the main species being gorse and hawthorn. Over 130 endemic species of the vegetable kingdom can be found in the different habitats and salt marshes of the Islote de Lobos. These include matos salado, salado lanudo, balancon, uvilla de mar, tabaco moro, verodes and of spurge and immortelle. Some specimens go unnoticed, such as the few varieties of lichen which form multicoloured patterns in rocky and volcanic areas.
